Welcome to the James Joyce CentreThe James Joyce Centre is to promote an understanding of the life and works of James Joyce. In doing so, the Centre tries to work with institutions to celebrate Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. The James Joyce Centre provides casual visitors with a rewarding and memorable experience. The Centre’s home is a restored 18th century townhouse in the north of Dublin, the city of Joyce’s birth and the setting for all his works. From this central place in Joyce’s heartland, the Centre aims to develop an appreciation of this most remarkable and significant literary figure of the 20th century. No. 35 North Great George’s Street was built in 1784 and decorated with fine plasterwork (灰泥) by Michael Stapleton. The house was restored in the 1980s and opened as the James Joyce Centre in 1996, run by members of Joyce’s sister’s family. The Kenmare Room is used for lectures and has a small show of reproductions of Joyce family pictures. In addition, this room provides details of Joyce’s life and times, a reading table where visitors can sit and read works by and about Joyce, and a show of some of the many translations of Joyce’s works. ExhibitionsThe centre’s permanent and temporary exhibitions show various aspects of Joyce’s life and works. Through shows and three films, you may dig into the novel about its historical background and learn more about Joyce’s life. The Centre also hosts International Joyce, an exhibition that provides a wonderful introduction to the life and works of James Joyce. B(2020山东)According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake. And contrary to existing research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions(份), it’s the beanpoles with big appetites you really need to avoid. To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, 95 undergraduate women were individually invited into a lab to ostensibly(表面上) participate in a study about movie viewership. Before the film began, each woman was asked to help herself to a snack. An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds. Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit, taking more food than they normally would have. However, they took significantly more when the actor was thin. For the second test, in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case, she took 30 pieces. The results were similar to the first test: the participants followed suit but took significantly more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces. The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when we’re making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more, so will I. Call it the “I’ll have what she’s having” effect. However, we’ll adjust the influence. If an overweight person is having a large portion, I’ll hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot, I’ll follow suit. If he can eat much and keep slim, why can’t I? 24.What is the recent study mainly about? A.Food safety. B.Movie viewership. C.Consumer demand. D.Eating behavior. 25.What does the underlined word “beanpoles” in paragraph 1 refer to? A.Big eaters. B.Overweight persons. C.Picky eaters. D.Tall thin persons. 26.Why did the researchers hire the actor? A.To see how she would affect the participants. B.To test if the participants could recognize her. C.To find out what she would do in the two tests. D.To study why she could keep her weight down. 27.On what basis do we “adjust the influence” according to the last paragraph? A.How hungry we are. B.How slim we want to be. C.How we perceive others. D.How we feel about the food. CJack was born without eyes. He was very lucky as he grew up having other kittens(young cats) to socialise(交往) with, and was used to people from the moment he was born. However, when it came time to find the kittens homes, no one knew where Jack would end up. That’s when I got an email from my friend. All she asked was “Do you still want one of the kittens? There’s one here with no eyes and no one would like to take him.” Without thinking I told her that I did want the kitten. When we first brought him home, Jack stayed mostly in my room. After about a day he had no issues running around and climbing on everything. At times he gets lost in the house, he’ll stop. But we just call his name and talk to him and it isn’t long before he finds his way back to us. A few weeks after getting Jack, we got a new cat named Bear. Jack and Bear have become best friends. It doesn’t matter that he can’t see. He always knows when Bear is around. He’ll run across the yard straight to Bear and wrap his front legs around his neck in a big hug. They run after each other around and wrestle(摔跤). They’ll lie down in the grass together when tired. Jack is truly an inspiration. I’ve owned lots of kittens in my life, but Jack is the happiest and most playful. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He doesn’t need pity. I think Jean, owner of Gumbo, another eyeless cat, said it best when she told me that cats don’t have disabilities; they have adaptabilities. 28.Why did Jack come to the author’s home? A.The author cared for an eyeless cat. B.The author didn’t mind whether he was blind. C.No other young cats kept him company. D.The author’s friend begged the author to take him home. 29.Which of the following statements is TRUE? A.Jack often wrestles with Bear indoors. B.Jack likes to play with a new eyeless cat. C.Jack quickly adapts to the new environment. D.Jack is good at talking and playing with people. 30.What does the underlined word “issue” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Trouble. B.Fun. C.Luck. D.Business. 31.What does the passage mainly tell us? A.A cat has nine lives. B.All is well that ends well. C.God helps those who help themselves. D.A good beginning makes a good ending. D(2019全国Ⅱ)Bacteria are an annoying problem for astronauts. The microorganisms(微生物) from our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station, so astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week. How is NASA overcoming this very tiny big problem? It’s turning to a bunch of high school kids. But not just any kids. It is depending on NASA HUNCH high school classrooms, like the one science teachers Gene Gordon and Donna Himmelberg lead at Fairport High School in Fairport, New York.HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers. For the past two years, Gordon’s students have been studying ways to kill bacteria in zero gravity, and they think they’re close to a solution(解决方案).“We don’t give the students any breaks. They have to do it just like NASA engineers,” says Florence Gold, a project manager.“There are no tests,” Gordon says.“There is no graded homework. There almost are no grades, other than ‘Are you working towards your goal?’ Basically, it’s ‘I’ve got to produce this product and then, at the end of the year, present it to NASA.’ Engineers come and really do an in-person review, and... it’s not a very nice thing at times. It’s a hard business review of your product.”Gordon says the HUNCH program has an impact(影响) on college admissions and practical life skills.“These kids are so absorbed in their studies that I just sit back. I don’t teach.” And that annoying bacteria? Gordon says his students are emailing daily with NASA engineers about the problem, readying a workable solution to test in space.32.What do we know about the bacteria in the International Space Station?A.They are hard to get rid of.B.They lead to air pollution.C.They appear in different forms.D.They damage the instruments.33.What is the purpose of the HUNCH program?A.To strengthen teacher-student relationships.B.To sharpen students’ communication skills.C.To allow students to experience zero gravity.D.To link space technology with school education.34.What do the NASA engineers do for the students in the program?A.Check their product.B.Guide project designs.C.Adjust work schedules.D.Grade their homework.35.What is the best title for the text?A.NASA: The Home of AstronautsB.Space: The Final Homework FrontierC.Nature: An Outdoor ClassroomD.HUNCH: A College Admission Reform第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.”After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you ‘It’s a crow’.”After a little while, the old father again asked his son the 3rd time, “What is this?”At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒) was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father unwillingly. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while after, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’?Are you not able to understand this?”A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question.
