In what is declared to be a world first, the Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire has linked up with a spin-out company from Napier University in Edinburgh. They plan to use bacteria to feed on the "leftovers" from the whisky(威士忌酒) making process. This will produce butanol which can be used to fuel vehicles.More than 90% of the stuff that comes out of a whisky distillery is not whisky. It is leftovers like draff and pot ales(酒糟)—both produced in the early stages of the process. They are high in sugar and are currently used for things like fertiliser and cattle feed. Napier University's Biofuel Research Centre (BfRC) has already shown that the right bacteria can feed on those by-products to produce butanol—a direct replacement for vehicle fuel. Now the spin-out company, Celtic Renewables, and independent whisky producer Tullibardine have signed an agreement. Together they will apply the process to thousands of tonnes of the distillery's leftovers. Professor Martin Tangney, founder of Celtic Renewables, said: “Our partnership with Tullibardine is an important step in the development of a business which combines two important Scottish industries — whisky and renewables. This project shows that creative use of existing technologies can utilise resources on our doorstep to benefit both the environment and the economy.”Douglas Ross, managing director of Tullibardine, which spends £250,000 disposing of its by-products every year, said: "We are delighted to be partnering Celtic Renewables in this creative business, the obvious benefits of which are environmental. It takes a cost to us and turns it into something that has social as well as commercial value."The project is being supported by a grant(拨款) from the Scottish government's Zero Waste Scotland initiative. Celtic Renewables said it eventually aimed to build a processing plant in Scotland, with the hope of building an industry that could be worth £60m a year. 51. How do people deal with whisky leftovers at present?A. They throw them away. B. They use them to feed people.C. They use them to feed bacteria. D. They use them for crops or cattle.52. What does the underlined word “utilise” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?A. make use of. B.get rid of. C. use up. D.find out.53. It can be inferred from the passage that____________.A. the government either supports or opposes the projectB. the technology has not been widely used yetC. the project will benefit both the environment and the economyD. the project has brought great profit to the company54. Which of the following categories does this passage belong to?a. Health. b. Science. c. Food. d. Nature. e. Environment. f. Business.A. b, c, e B. b, e, f C. a, b, f D. a, b, cBThere has been much discussion recently about reducing the weight of English in China's high-stake tests such as the national college entrance examination. It is argued by some applauding the recent change to reduce the importance of English in tests so that it will lead students to focus more on learning Chinese. The TV program Writing in Chinese has exposed the problem that students and the general public cannot write in Chinese as they used to do.Some blame the design of the curriculum for giving English an equal or greater amount of emphasis, which might have contributed to the failure in teaching Chinese. But this is probably not a fair accusation since children in English speaking countries cannot spell either.I doubt that studying English in itself hurts the study of Chinese. In fact, high achievers in English or another foreign language are more likely to be high achievers in Chinese. It has been proved many times in recent Chinese history that those capable of using a foreign language are also masters in their mother tongue. Qian Zhongshu, Lu Xun and Lin Yutang are just a few examples.Another trend of thought for curriculum reform is related to the perception of "worth". It is true that English is one of the subjects that students do spend too much time on, with pitiful results. This makes some doubt if it is worth giving it priority. But this is not a sound argument either as students still need to study things that matter more to their future in spite of challenges learning English presents to them.Improvements in Chinese language education should not be achieved by sacrificing another important subject. There should be a robust(健康的) foreign language education program, as a foreign language improves a student's future job prospects. Bashing(抨击) English education as a waste of time or using it as a goat for failures in Chinese education are both harmful tendencies. To be constructive, we ought to start a dialogue on ways to make improvements in learning outcomes so that students' time learning English is spent more effectively. There are a few things that could improve English education, such as assessment design, learner motivation and teaching style.I am sure there are many other areas where changes can greatly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of English learning. The public discourse at present is a little oversimplified. People are arguing for or against English having less weight in major tests, when the dialogue should be taken a step further, to the improvement of learning or teaching methods that may benefit the teaching of other subjects as well, Chinese included.55. In paragraph 3 Qian Zhongshu, Lu Xun and Lin Yutang are mentioned to _____.A. show respect for their capabilities of learning languagesB. prove English and Chinese are not contradictoryC. confirm the importance of learning English in ChinaD. tell the readers English Education is to blame56. According to the passage, which of the following statements is right?A. The TV program Writing in Chinese is very popular at present.B. Good results of learning English are not worth so much time.C. Some are in favor of attaching less importance to English in exams.D. Sacrificing English can improve Chinese language education.57. In the writer’s opinion, what should be done to solve the argument?A. Increasing time spent in learning Chinese.B. Increasing time spent in learning English.C. Reducing the weight of English in examinations.D. Improving the learning outcomes effectively. 58. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?A. English education is still important in China. B. Chinese education is more important in China.C. English contributes to the failure in teaching Chinese D. Ways to make improvements in learning Chinese.CIn this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her  leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year. As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard  on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn't win the contest again? That's the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface. A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, "Don't you want to win again?" "No," she replied, "I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade." I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that  I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for  characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly  "guided" by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it. Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter's experience. While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with  more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while  I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices. 59. What do we learn from the first paragraph? A. A lot of entertainments compete for children's time nowadays.  B. Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time. C. Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities.  D. Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing. 60. What did the author say about her own writing experience? A. She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer. B. Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations. C. She was constantly under pressure of writing more.  D. Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.61. The author took great pains to correct her daughter's stories because _____. A. she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dreams of becoming a writer B. she was afraid Rebecca's imagination might run wild while writing  C. she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so much  D. she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance62. What's the author's advice for parents? A. Children should be given every chance to voice their opinions. B. Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.  C. Children should be allowed freedom to grow through experience.  D. A writing career, though attractive, is not for every child to pursue.DThe $11 billion self-help industry is built on the idea that you should turn negative thoughts like "I never do anything right" into positive ones like "I can succeed." But was positive thinking advocate Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?Researchers in Canada just published a study in the journal Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply highlight how unhappy they are.The study's authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by citing(引用) older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is overly positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your depressed friend that he has the potential of an Einstein, you're just underlining his faults. In one 1990s experiment, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton asked participants to write essays opposing funding for the disabled. When the essayists were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written. In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic measured 68 students' self-esteem. The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings。
