Gilleece looked through camera videos, watching the woman's every step in the bar until she went to sit on a bench outside and left when her ride arrived. Then a young man approached the bench and put something in his pocket. Gilleece posted several pictures on the bar's Facebook page, asking if anybody knew the guy.Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17yearold Prather. Prather admitted having taken the wallet because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but just took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks (码头) into the ocean.Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the bar. There, Prather said that, not getting along with his family, he had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece saw him as a kid rather than a criminal. But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could face prison. Gilleece planned to employ two divers to search for it. This year's report also pays special attention to the happiness of each country's immigrants. The U.S. dropped four spots from 2017 and landed in 18th place. And last year's winner, Norway, came in second place — followed by Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland.“The top five countries all have almost equally high values for the six factors found to support happiness, and four of these countries — Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and now Finland — have been in first place in the six World Happiness Report rankings since the first report in 2012”, coeditor John Helliwell told CNN. “In a division with such excellent teams, changes in the top spot are to be expected.”Rounding out the top 10 happiest countries was Canada in seventh place, then New Zealand, Sweden and Australia. The order of the top 10 countries changed from the 2017 list but the countries did not, according to the report. They were also 10 of the 11 top spots in the immigrant happiness category (including Mexico — 24th overall, but 10th in immigration).“The most striking finding of the report is the remarkable consistency between the happiness of the immigrants and the locallyborn,” Helliwell said in a statement. “Although immigrants come from countries with very different levels of happiness, their reported life evaluations resemble those of other residents in their new countries. Those who move to happier countries gain, while those who move to less happy countries lose.”Other major world powers were placed in significantly low spots on the list. Germany came in 15th, the U.K. was 19th — followed by Japan in 54th place, Russia in 59th and China in 86th.The report, based on surveys completed by citizen volunteers, came just under a week before the International Day of Happiness on March 20, when the U.N. declared to recognize “the relevance of happiness and wellbeing as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives”.8.Which place did the U.S. rank in the World Happiness Report 2017? A.14th. B.10th.C.18th. D.22nd.9.What is the most significant finding of the report?A.That immigrants are different from residents in their new countries.B.That immigrants come from countries with different levels of happiness.C.That immigrants become happy when they move to other countries.D.That immigrants and locals feel the similar level of happiness.10.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Happiness is no less important than any other aspect in life.B.People's happiness and wellbeing should be considered when it comes to policymaking.C.The happiness report came under a week before the International Day of Happiness.D.What the U.N. declared was beneficial to all human beings.11.What is the best title of the passage?A.The International Day of HappinessB.Happiness — Forever PursuitC.What's Your Happiness Index (指数)D.The World Happiness Report 2018D [2020·大连高三一模]Rich as a KingWilliam Ⅰ, who conquered England some 950 years ago, had wealth, power and an army. Yet although William was very rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing like a flush toilet (抽水马桶), paper towels, or a riding lawn mower (割草机). How did he get_by?History books are filled with wealthy people who were poor compared to me. I have storm windows, Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled before Alexander the Great, but he couldn't buy cat food. Czar Nicholas lacked an electric saw.Given how much better off I am than so many famous dead people, you'd think I'd be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my wealth with that of living persons: neighbors, school classmates, famous TV people. The greed I feel toward my friend Howard's new kitchen is not reduced by the fact that no kings ever had a refrigerator with glass doors. There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different things to feel sad about. You'd think that simply not having disease would put us in a good mood, but no, we want a hot bath too.Of course, one way to achieve happiness would be to realize that even by today's standards the things I own are pretty nice. My house is smaller than the houses of many investment bankers, but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife and I can keep clean.Besides, to people looking back at our era from a century or two in the future, these bankers' fancy counter tops and my own worn Formica will seem equally shabby. I can't keep up with my neighbors right now. But just wait.12.What does the underlined phrase “get by” in the first paragraph mean?A.Succeed as a king. B.Deal with complaints.C.Live in a satisfactory way. D.Get some extra money.13.How many historical figures are mentioned to compare lives in the past and present?A.3. B.4.C.5.
